Urine in The Garden & Compost? Yes, Let’s Go There!

Number 3 was a real shocker to me !

In my warm garden shed, heated by the bright spring sunlight, I am contemplating what more gardening hints and tips that I can share with you today. What seems like a great idea that I know or have heard? What if it is such a well-known thing that you would think, “Well duh, Everyone knows that.”

But every little idea which you feel might be common knowledge may be something new to someone who is just in the beginning of their exploration of flower or vegetable gardening.

Get Out And Get The Weeds Now!

Late in this winter season is a great time to attack the small weeds before they get the upper hand. Those small weeds will get larger and larger, and since a lot of them are already blooming or getting ready to bloom, such as bittercress and Persian speedwell, get out there and pull them before those flowers mature and make seeds. One plant can make hundreds if not thousands of seeds, so the earlier you attack and pull, the better.

I know the little Persian speedwell has the cutest little blue flowers. They are sometimes called Bird’s Eye speedwell, but beware of letting it go to seed. You will pull weeds for seven years!

Now seriously, you don’t want to do that , do you?

And if you really have that much time to pull weeds, let me tell you how to get to my garden pronto!

Deer or Bird Netting – It DOES Work !

In one of my earlier posts in the fall when I was having trouble with Diggers in the Garden, I tried using some light plastic bird netting or deer netting to deter the squirrels and chipmunks from digging in my hypertufa containers.

Guess what? It worked!  I just wrapped it around the trough and secured it with larger rocks on the edges (for my large T Rex Trough). The smaller ones I just wrapped and secured the netting underneath or tied it around the outside.

Nothing was dug into! Nothing was disturbed. It worked perfectly. I will remove it soon and just roll it back up to store.

And if I see any funny business going on in the garden, I will just put it back.

It is almost invisible, so I won’t hesitate! Did you hear that, Diggers?

Urine in the Garden? On My Compost Pile?

Let me start by saying that this is not a joke at all. This is something I have heard and checked the information available and it seems legit.

We are all aware of the drought in some areas here in the USA and the shortage of water. It is getting to crisis proportions and needs some serious ideas to save water.

We are flushing water down the toilet each year in the amount of  billions of gallons. Seems sort of a waste, doesn’t it?

Don’t use your toilet when you have to pee. Use your compost pile. Yep, your compost pile.

First of all, this would easily to apply for males, unless you are really an agile or accomplished female. Or you are willing to pee into a container and take it out to the compost pile. Like you do the egg shells and potato peels. Right? That said…

Perhaps to avoid getting arrested ,etc, it might be best for both men and women to use a container and then take it to the compost pile. You know you sometimes have nosy neighbors. LOL

Conserve Water, don't flush it, compost it. (1)

Urine in the garden is rich in nitrogen, and has moderate amounts of phosphorus, and some potassium. And it is sterile coming from a healthy human being. This is a great accelerator for your compost pile, and it is free. Yes, this is all true right?

Ask yourself:  Aren’t you glad to get some cow or horse manure to add to your compost pile and then spread all over your garden? That manure has a lot more chance of spreading pathogens that your own sterile urine.

If you have not heard of this before, there is quite a bit of information available.

Wow, this is some information to digest. What are you all doing with your “Liquid Gold.” Are you wasting water and flushing it down the toilet?
