I Wish I Could Get Some Sleep!
Don’t all of us Moms and Dads know that feeling?
Those times when we just cannot keep our eyes open? Maybe it’s because we never seem to get enough time to sleep ourselves! These cute babies are nodding off with that little jerk of their heads that we all know so well.
I can remember that feeling coming over me during school. You all remember some boring class where the teacher or professor just drones on and on and you just cannot seem to stay awake. And, of course, there are those times at your job when the Team Meeting is so excruciatingly boring and you are sitting at the conference table just across from the department head. ( Almost as embarrassing as when you are sitting there and your stomach is growling!)
But we Moms and Dads are always sleep deprived. It’s just Family Life. Maybe a Mom more so than the Dads, at least in my experience. I was always the one getting up with the young ones since I alone was able to feed them. But that is what I signed up for when I decided to breast feed. I loved every moment, don’t get me wrong, but sometimes in the middle of the night, I wished I could be the one to roll over, push my husband out of the bed so that he could be the one to go warm a bottle and feed them.
But we know how our bodies were. We needed to get up and relieve that fullness which made us know the baby was due to start crying anyway. And can anyone identify? That wet nightgown as you walked to the baby’s room to get her or him? Can’t stop that wonderful maternal instinct when you hear a crying baby!
My daughter returned to work soon after her baby was born. But she faithfully took the breast pump and made sure that her little boy was well fed. I know she was tired and it is inconvenient in most workplaces to find a place where you can pump, but she did it. And it is her devotion to her baby that got her through.
Moms do that you know. At they do it for love!
And so we don’t mind if they nod off sometimes for a moment. We understand, don’t we? We’ve been there!
