That's entertainment - Hummingbird Feeders

Hummingbird Feeders – So Entertaining!

What can be more entertaining than watching little hummingbirds flying around your feeders? Well, maybe the next season of Game of Thrones, but when in the world is that going to be?  I can watch the little hummingbird feeders now. Or at least for the rest of the summer. I have had hummers here in Ohio as late as October, but sadly, they may not have made it south in time.

Three Hummingbird feeders, enough for all but they still fight over them.

How many of those feeders do you hang each year?  At this time, I only have five of them up. That is about all I can manage since they have to be cleaned and filled so often. I have three of them in a tree in the front yard right outside my window where I write, so I see them darting around and fighting all the time. I guess I have a lot of males in my area because most seem to “claim” a feeder and will chase another hummer away.

Hummingbird feeders can be so entertaining - even educational for your kids!

Which Hummingbird Feeders Do I Prefer?

My number one requirement for my hummingbird feeders is that they MUST have a large opening. Nothing is more frustrating than trying to clean a feeder and you cannot reach in a get into the full inside of the container. As you see in the photos, I have the feeders with the large openings, so these work for me the best.

I have also purchased this year an [easyazon_link identifier=”B005F5NH6E” locale=”US” tag=”thehypegard0d-20″]extra large feeder[/easyazon_link] that holds about 30oz of nectar. This is really convenient since it doesn’t need to be refilled daily. Depending on the heat, I can usually go for 2-3 days before it needs refilled.

Do you use the [easyazon_link identifier=”B07D2HT3JX” locale=”US” tag=”thehypegard0d-20″]Ant Moats[/easyazon_link] when hanging your feeder?  These really work to keep the ants out of the feeders. Now those bees and wasps, they all want a drink too, so I just have to look the other way…I need to share with all the pollinators. But I draw the line at the ants since they will fill up the feeder with their little floating corpses quickly….I don’t want my hummers eating there. ( Even though they don’t seem to mind… See that in the video.)

Window Hummingbird Feeders – Perfect, but Flawed

I found a cute [easyazon_link identifier=”B00004RA8V” locale=”US” tag=”thehypegard0d-20″]little hummingbird feeder with a small suction cup[/easyazon_link] that attached to my window. I thought this would be ideal to see up close and personal when my little hummers fly right by the family room. It was so great! Early mornings ( and all day), they would come up to the feeder and rest, drink, and of course, fight with others. Even standing right next to the window with a really clear view of him/her, they didn’t mind.

What do I think about window hummingbird feeders

I worried about the reflection in the glass and if they would crash into it, but that didn’t happen. I never saw a single collision at all.

But check out the video and you can see my problem.

Ants! Tons of ants! You can see on the video where I film from the upstairs window how they swarm over the feeder. I just can’t have that. There was no way that I could figure out how to attach an Ant Moat since the suction cup holds the feeder against the window. So that feeder has been taken down and now resides in the Garden Shop until some brilliant idea comes to mind sometime and I find a way to hang it. But it won’t be on a window.

No! for those hummingbird feeders attached to the window.

But it was SO COOL on the window…(whine)

Hummingbird Feeders - For the Yard, not My Window!

I tried filming as best I could, but my hummers are very camera shy. I can have 3-4 flitting around but as soon as I hold a camera up, they are gone! So I have put a few film clips of the ones I could catch. Hope you enjoy!

So jealous of you people who have hundreds visiting!
