Hoarders of Garden Magazines ! A Solution!

Are you also a Hoarder of Garden Magazines?

I feel like I have hundreds of them. Come on, get real. I admit I have hundreds of them, hoping I am not sick enough to have thousands…shut up, Jerry!

But I love looking at these magazines and imagining:

  • someday my garden will look like that
  • maybe I will have such a well-designed garden one day
  • someday I can get my (fill in the blank) to look like that
  • maybe I can organize all my tools to look like that
  • maybe I just am a unique type of gardener to be studied…yeah!

It is a mystery to my husband why I like to keep all these magazines. We won’t even start discussing books. I have a lot of those too, and I can’t help gravitating to the gardening section of the bookstores when we go.

And don’t even let me into a garage sale where they are selling them cheaply! I can be tempted to carry them out by the box load!

Hoarders of Garden Magazines and books - the Hypertufa Gardener

My justification goes like this: I love to read, and have always been an avid reader since I was a child. I haunted the library and read everything. I guess I was what is called a Nerd. My parents had a set of encyclopedias and I read them when I didn’t have another fiction book available……yeah, that bad.

But I learned a lot, and I can play Trivial Pursuit and Jeopardy really well! ( I’ll pause for you to yawn.)

So when I developed an interest in gardening later in my  adult years, I absolutely loved magazines with dream pictures, colorful and bright, cheerfully allowing you to dream on a rainy day. Even in winter, it is nice to look at all the possibilities for next year!

But I have found a good use for all my magazines. It will be hard to cut them up, but it is either that, or move to a bigger house, and I refuse to move……..

I am not packing up all those magazines, and I certainly will not leave all my plants!

The Magazine Hoarders Solution

I am “wallpapering” my garden shed with the magazine pages. Perfect!

It is awesome. So much color, and right where I need it. I am using [easyazon_link identifier=”B001IKES5O” locale=”US” tag=”thehypegard0d-20″] Mod-Podge [/easyazon_link], and then , for a cheaper alternative, just  [easyazon_link identifier=”B0038DZZJC” locale=”US” tag=”thehypegard0d-20″] Elmer’s Glue-All [/easyazon_link] with a little added water.

I am gradually covering everything with polyurethane when dries. It may not preserve it forever, but I will always have more magazines, and redo it a few years down the road!

Simple and Easy Method

Just get a pile of pretty pages, brush on your adhesive, place on wall randomly. Easy to do. No mistakes, because it is all random anyway. Then brush over your pages with the Mod-Podge to seal it on. It looks pretty immediately.

I really like it. And I can add to it whenever I come across something I like. And also I can put up helpful articles that I can refer to easily, right?  Jacob, my grandson, likes to paste and glue too. so he is helping. Love it!

How do you think it looks? Have you done much decoupage? Maybe this isn’t “decoupage” in a strict sense, but close to it. And it is fun!  It seems to be a job that is always in progress. I find a spot for a new article every day.

Is there any need to quit buying more magazines?  I really need a lot more, right?

Thank you for the idea. I scrapbook and along with my gardening magazine collection, I have equal amouts of scrapbooking magazines. It came to me that I can use the same idea only I’d be covering my scrapbooking project boxes. The same can be applied with old picture boxes.
Love it and thank you for the help with decluttering my crafting space

    1. And thank you for visiting. I would love an old picture box covered with pictures. Sounds wonderful!

  2. HaHa, just one more reason to keep my HUNDREDS of magazines. And I’m not a hoarder, I’m a collector!

    1. Oh, I like it, I am not a hoarder, then. I, too, am a collector….I feel a lot better now! You are making me feel much better! LOL

I have to say, that I was a magazine keeper, too. But, finally I would cut picture out, and file them, in the ever growing garden file. Now, I prefer to view online, because there so many more pictures, online ! 🙂 And, no one can get mad at me for buying a magazine. wink, wink.

    1. That’s a good idea. Online magazines. Then I won’t have to pack and save and worry about what to do with them.

  4. I think it looks great but I’m not sure I could cut my gardening magazines.

    1. Yes, it was very hard to cut them. But they were just collecting dust and the piles were getting higher and higher. I think I am gonna like the garden shed walls now. Especially this winter. Like the site name of yours. I will go visiting.

  5. What a neat idea! I know that I always love magazines for the eye candy, so this is so perfect to keep enjoying all the great images!

    1. Thanks, I know there are all kinds of magazines, so you can decorate any way you want.
